New Hacks Enable MMS on iPhone 2G and Tethering Feature on iPhone OS 3.1.2

The non-availability of the MMS feature for 1st generation iPhone (iPhone 2G) was probably one of the most disappointing news for iPhone 2G users that was announced at the WWDC 2009 Keynote address. Apple had introduced MMS feature in iPhone OS 3.0 but is officially available to only iPhone 3Gand iPhone 3GS users.

The iPhone hacking community has figure out a way to enable MMS on iPhone 2G.

They have also been able to enable the tethering feature on iPhones running iPhone OS 3.1.2.

Before we go into the details, please note that both the hacks are risky as they involve hacking the baseband so please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Apple had introduced MMS feature in iPhone OS 3.0 but was available to only iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users. iPhone hacking expert, whiterat has released a baseband hack that will enable the MMS feature for iPhone 2G users.

If you remember, some clever folks had figured out a simple hack to enable the tethering feature in iPhone OS 3.0 but Apple had disabled it in iPhone OS 3.1.2.

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team has figured out a way to enable it again in iPhone OS 3.1.2. You can checkout this guide for more details on how to enable tethering on your iPhone running iPhone OS 3.1.2 using the two-bit baseband hack, if you can’t wait for AT&T to release it officially, which might not be happen in 2009.
