Both the iPhone 2G and 3G lacked the autofocus and short range macro clarity for that task, and while the iPhone 3GS made up for that in large degree, RedLaser is going the extra mile and enabling barcode scanning without using the autofocus. So, yes, it works fine on all generations of iPhone.

Doesn’t sound like it was easy — Apple rejected the application’s use of the camera 6 times before iPhone 3.1 rolled around and they got the big, green light to start scanning. It will no doubt be appreciated by users.

'MobileNavigator North America' Adds Live Traffic as In App Purchase

Navigon's popular turn-by-turn GPS iPhone application MobileNavigator North America [App Store, $89.99] has been updated to offer live traffic information in the U.S. and Canada. The new addition, known as Navigon Traffic Live, is available via In App Purchasing for an additional one-time $19.99 fee.

News of the addition first surfaced in mid-September at which time it was noted that the $19.99 fee for live traffic would be a promotional price for the first four weeks of availability, with the price increasing to $24.99 after that time. The feature had been scheduled for an October launch, and made its first appearance in country-specific European application versions at the very end of the month. The feature was added to the company's broader MobileNavigator Europe iPhone application last week before coming to the U.S. and Canada yesterday.

Other minor changes available in the MobileNavigator North America update include extended searching of map areas once a destination has been entered and the ability to launch the application directly in landscape orientation.

Apple Begins Shipping TomTom Car Kit in U.S.

Several U.S. readers have reported that Apple has begun shipping the TomTom iPhone car kit, which finally appeared in the company's U.S. online store several weeks ago. The kit, which is priced at $119.95 and does not include the navigation application, offers an iPhone mount with integrated GPS receiver for improved performance, hands-free calling, and a built-in speaker for clearer spoken directions.

A few European customers had been able to get their hands on the kit at Apple's brick-and-mortar stores, although supplies there now appear to be tight with shipping windows currently set at 4-6 weeks compared to the 2-3 week window in the U.S. for new orders.
